About Us

A Journey That Became Two Missions

The Unspoken Hero Society and AnemiaFaro were founded by Lathan Singleton, a Community Health Director, Community Health Worker, patient navigator, rare disease advocate, and third-generation individual living with sickle cell disease.

Growing up with a lifelong chronic illness, Lathan experienced firsthand the challenges of navigating healthcare, overcoming barriers to treatment, and advocating for himself during medical crises. Those experiences shaped a simple belief:

No one should have to navigate illness, disability, or hardship alone.

That belief became the foundation for two organizations working toward one shared vision—building communities where every person is seen, supported, and connected to care.

The Unspoken Hero Society

Founded in 2010, The Unspoken Hero Society was created to serve individuals and families affected by chronic illness, rare disease, disability, and other life-changing challenges.

The organization exists to bridge the gap between healthcare systems and the people they serve through community health work, advocacy, education, mentorship, patient navigation, and leadership development.

The Unspoken Hero Society believes every person deserves more than services—they deserve community, dignity, and someone willing to walk beside them.

Our Mission

To empower individuals and families by providing compassionate health navigation, advocacy, education, and community support that helps people overcome barriers and improve their quality of life.

AnemiaFaro

While expanding community outreach into Baja California, Lathan recognized another unmet need.

Many residents, migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers living with chronic illnesses struggled to understand where to seek care, how to access healthcare systems, or who to trust for guidance.

Rather than waiting for services to exist, he began building relationships with shelters, clinics, healthcare professionals, and community organizations throughout Baja California.

From those efforts, AnemiaFaro was born.

AnemiaFaro serves as a community-based health navigation initiative focused on helping individuals affected by sickle cell disease, sickle cell trait, chronic anemia, and other complex health conditions navigate healthcare and access community resources.

Our Mission

To build a trusted network of health navigation and community support throughout Baja California by connecting people to care, education, and essential resources through compassionate, culturally responsive service.

One Vision. Two Communities.

While each organization serves different communities, they are guided by the same philosophy.

The Philosophy Behind Our Work

Everything we do begins with three guiding principles.

Presence Before Programs

People need someone willing to show up before they need another program.

Trust Before Systems

Healing begins when relationships are built before services are offered.

People Before Process

Every individual deserves compassion, dignity, and personalized support—not to become just another case number.

Building a Community, Not Just an Organization

Neither The Unspoken Hero Society nor AnemiaFaro was created to be defined by one person.

They were built to create communities where patients become advocates, neighbors become volunteers, and lived experience becomes leadership.

Together with healthcare professionals, Community Health Workers, volunteers, partner organizations, and the people we serve, we are building networks of care that extend far beyond hospital walls.

Founder: Lathan Singleton

"Living with sickle cell disease has shaped every part of my journey. It taught me the importance of advocacy, compassion, and the power of community. As a Community Health Worker, patient navigator, and advocate, I've dedicated my life to ensuring that no one has to face chronic illness alone.

My love for the sickle cell community is unconditional, and that same commitment extends to everyone living with chronic illness, rare disease, and disability. Through The Unspoken Hero Society and AnemiaFaro, my mission is to help people navigate healthcare, build lasting communities of support, and create opportunities for every person to live a healthy, meaningful, and fulfilling life. Because everyone deserves more than survival—they deserve the chance to truly thrive."
